Mae West (1893-1980) is probably the most famous full-figured actress in film history. She appeared in films from the 1930s up to 1980, writing her own excellent scripts.
This portrait shows her in the 1940 film "My Little Chickadee" (in which she co-starred with W.C. Fields). As well as her witty dialogue, she had great style and poise, helped along by some splendid Vera West designed costumes in this particular film.
Some favourite quotes from that film:
In answer to a man offering to protect her: "Funny. Every man I meet wants to protect me. I can't figure out what from"!
A court judge asked if she is trying to show contempt for this court. She answered: "No. I'm doing my best to hide it"!
