This type of drawing is not as difficult as it looks. If you have the shiny object in front of you, it's fairly easy to reproduce the reflections. You can see the shadowy figure of the artist in this ladle! With the ladle resting on a sheet of white paper, the shadows (and any reflected highlights) will give that 3D effect, especially when viewed on-screen.
